Rep. Adriano Espaillat is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, leads the House Hispanic Caucus, and is even a former illegal alien, legalized back in the 80s as part of Reagan's amnesty and (not-so-successful) immigration reform.
What he is not, though, is viciously antisemitic. That's not to say that he is a fan of Israel and especially Bibi Netanyahu, because he is not. He favors a "two-state solution," opposes settlements on the West Bank, and has been highly critical of Israeli policies, but he opposes BDS and has yet to call for the burning of all Jews (hyperbole there), so Zohran Mamdani and the DSA-wing of the party are running an opponent in the Democratic primary.
His opponent, Darializa Avila Chevalier, is a total nutcase, and a communist to boot. She hates Jews with the passion of 10,000 suns, and her supporters are exactly as you would expect.
A progressive incumbent, who’s running on his “credentials” as a one-time illegal migrant, is considered too “mainstream” by Mamdani and his comrades…who are pushing for a pure Marxist. Aren’t they overplaying their hand, even in super-blue NYC? https://t.co/Lq8OR9WjI3

The beauty of being a communist is that you need not express yourself in a manner more intelligible than an inarticulate howl, and that is precisely what they are doing right here.
No need even for words. All you need to do is sound like a Muslim woman in mourning while chasing somebody you dislike, and you count it a political win. And, perhaps, it IS a political win, since it succeeds in silencing your opponent and driving him off the rhetorical battlefield.
New York City Democrat candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier wants to ABOLISH prisons and open up America’s border.

WTF is wrong with these people..!? pic.twitter.com/GJpaNlmekc
Chevalier is about as radical as you can be without having put a capitalist pig against the wall and shooting them, which explains why she was a leader for Students for Justice in Palestine as a PhD candidate at Columbia, and why she was a key figure in Zohran Mamdani's campaign.
Watch as Darializa Avila Chevalier, prison abolitionist, is asked *four times* how she would handle a murderer, and each time refuses to answer. https://t.co/NFXYotaFx0 pic.twitter.com/2ofcyeOCFG

She doesn't believe that murderers belong in jail, and she hates the merely left-wing Democrats with almost as much passion as she does Republicans or Jews, since we are all easy to lump into the same non-communist category. Unsurprisingly, she is very much in the Graham Platner camp, and gets defended by the same people who are head over heels for him.
Graham Platner's strategist Morris Katz - who tried putting an explicit picture of himself in a children's book - defends Darializa Avila Chevalier after she calls to abolish police:

It's difficult to overstate how insane her positions are, and by extension those of the Mamdani and even Bernie Sanders supporters. Mamdani and Sanders are holding rallies for Chevalier and the two other primary challengers in New York that Mamdani is trying to help get over the line, including Dan Goldman's challenger.

The antisemitism behind what Darializa Avila Chevalier (D) is saying is astonishing. She's implying that Harlem is like the West Bank because Jews are buying up the land & pushing "brown people" out. This is something you would expect a Grand Wizard of the KKK to say & not a candidate for Congress in Manhattan.
“It is a very visually similar situation”
Darializa Avila Chevalier, who is running for Congress, said the West Bank and Gaza are the same as her own district in New York City.
She said in both cases the displacement is caused by “corporate interests” buying up the land.
This might be one of the most intellectually dishonest things I've ever heard. Jews are not "corporate interests," those insistent on living in the West Bank do so because there is a deep cultural and religious connection to that land in particular.
Palestinians also have a deep connection to that land, thus the conflict is born.
Also, you're comparing the district you run to Gaza? Really?
Chevalier herself is not a terribly interesting figure. All you need to know about her is that she is a PhD student at Columbia, and you can fill in the rest of the blanks. SJP, decarceration, and communism are almost givens, although she does stand out a tiny bit by arguing that interracial marriages are suspect, although by now we should expect resegregation as a platform for radical leftists.

What makes this race interesting is that it is part of the DSA/communist takeover of the Democratic Party, or at least their so-far successful bid to do so. Mamdani is making a bid to become the spiritual leader of that movement, alongside AOC and Bernie Sanders, and he is well positioned to do so. He is smarter, more charming, and arguably has more genuine power than any other DSA member, and he is wielding it well.
Mamdani has also endorsed Claire Valdez, who is vying for Nydia Velázquez’s vacant seat in New York’s seventh congressional district, and Brad Lander, who is challenging Dan Goldman for his seat in the 10th. He appeared with the trio in a basketball-themed political ad that first aired during postgame coverage of Game 1 of the New York Knicks’ championship run in the NBA finals.
On Thursday, Mamdani and the US senator Bernie Sanders held a rally for the mayor’s three endorsed candidates ahead of their primaries.
Avila Chevalier, 32, served as the Mamdani mayoral campaign’s organizing lead for her district’s region, where he won by nearly 60% to 40% against former New York governor Andrew Cuomo. Espaillat endorsed Cuomo in the party’s mayoral primary, before he was beaten by Mamdani. Like many prominent New York Democrats, Espaillat pivoted in the general election, endorsing Mamdani over Cuomo.
Avila Chevalier, who has lived in New York for about 14 years, felt “deeply abandoned by the establishment politics that we’ve had to live with for so long”, she said. “In a community that is so often spoken of as though we’re merely statistics, as though the problems we face day in and day out aren’t the direct results of the policy choices that our leadership makes, I think it’s time for a change.”
No doubt AOC and Sanders see in Mamdani a powerful ally, and he is. But if they believe that they are in a superior position to him, I suspect that they have another thing coming. Mamdani is a force to be reckoned with.
Mamdani is taking aim at two of the most powerful Democrats in Congress: Dan Goldman and Adriano Espaillat, neither of whom is exactly a moderate Democrat. Their sin in Mamdani's eyes is that they don't hate Israel as much as he does, and aren't radical enough to be DSA members.
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani calls AIPAC a "monster" that "moves dark money."

No mention of Russia or the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan. I guess they aren't as "bad" as AIPAC is to Mamdani.
Insane. pic.twitter.com/nJ0YbhubQa
Democrats are playing with fire by embracing Mamdani, AOC, Ilhan Omar, and Graham Platner. They see political gold in them thar hills, but as Espaillat and Goldman are finding out, the revolution eats its own. The Bolshevik Democrats can never be friends with the Organized Crime Democrats, because they intend to replace them.
You start reading this, and you're like, "Well, that's pretty disturbing."
— Bonchie (@bonchieredstate) June 22, 2026
Then you get to the last sentence, and it just escalates to the moon. https://t.co/521MI25the
And, as that video of Espaillat getting harassed by Mamdani harridans shows, you can't reason with them, or ask them to share power. They are driven by inarticulate rage and envy, and their hunger for power and revenge cannot be satisfied.
