It really has been a while since we've had a migrant caravan on the way to the US border. I can't remember the last one that made it through. I don't think there have been any since Trump took office. In fact, even before he took office he was taking credit for getting Mexico to agree to block any caravans that came our way. Here's what was reported back in December 2024:
While Mr. Trump posted on social media that Mexico had agreed to stop migration to the United States through Mexico, “effectively closing our Southern Border,” Ms. Sheinbaum limited her description of the migration-related issues they had discussed to migrant caravans no longer reaching the border with the United States...
“I had an excellent conversation with President Donald Trump,” she wrote on social media. “We addressed Mexico’s strategy regarding the migration phenomenon, and I shared that caravans are no longer reaching the northern border as they are being addressed within Mexico.”
She's kept her word since then, though it also seems possible that word has gotten around that it's not worth trying anymore. Under Trump, the border is closed.
But this week there are fresh reports that caravan of several hundred people has entered Mexico from Central America with its sights set on the US border.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a strong warning to a major migrant caravan that crossed into Mexico and was moving north with hopes of reaching the U.S.-Mexico border.
"USBP is closely engaged with its international partners to monitor their movement and any additional developments," DHS told Fox News in a statement. "[United States Border Patrol] USBP reminds migrants that under the leadership of President Trump and Homeland Secretary Mullin, the border has remained closed and secured for the last 16 months."
The caravan, numbering in the hundreds as of Monday, is predominantly made up of Hondurans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans, Ecuadoreans and Haitians.
There is some video of the new caravan, though at least one clip I saw circulating on X was apparently AI generated. I don't speak Spanish but this coverage is coming from media outlets in Central America.

Newsweek says the Caravan started out in Honduras on September 20th.
The journey began on September 20, when between 200 and 400 Honduran migrants left San Pedro Sula in small groups and headed toward the border with Guatemala, according to the Spanish news agency EFE.
By early Monday, September 28, a caravan known as "Fe y Esperanza," or "Faith and Hope," had grown to more than 600 migrants as it resumed its journey from Tapachula, southern Mexico, toward the country's northern border with the United States, EFE reported. The group included people from Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Ecuador and Haiti.
Faith might get them a new life in Mexico but I don't think they're going to be able to enter the United States.
Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has declared a national emergency at the southern border, deployed active-duty military personnel and National Guard troops to support border operations, imposed extensive restrictions on asylum access, and pursued a policy of detaining and removing migrants who cross illegally rather than releasing them into the United States.
Border crossings have plummeted under those measures. U.S. Border Patrol recorded 8,870 apprehensions along the southwest border in August 2026, according to DHS, 94 percent below the monthly average during the Biden administration.
DHS also said Border Patrol released no migrants into the country that month, extending a run of zero releases to 16 consecutive months.
As usual, these are economic migrants, not legitimate asylum seekers.
Migrants interviewed by EFE cited economic hardship among their reasons for leaving Honduras. One woman traveling with two children said there was no work available to her in the country. Another migrant acknowledged that reaching the United States would be difficult but said he would nevertheless try.
Millions of similar migrants abused the asylum system during President Biden's tenure and many of them are still in the US awaiting their moment before an immigration judge. But in the past, most migrants would stay, regardless of what the judge ordered. Trump solved this problem by simply not allowing anyone to enter. Now there's no massive backlog of new cases, no overwhelmed cities along the border and no more buses taking migrants to blue cities like Chicago and New York. The mayors in those cities are relieved Trump solved the problem, they just won't admit it.
