San Francisco: Trans Activist Charged with Threatening an ICE Officer, Destruction of Property

More than a month ago I wrote about attempts by anti-ICE activists in San Francisco to prevent arrests at a city immigration court. If you're a regular reader you may remember this video.

There was a similar protest Wednesday with a similar group of masked activists trying to start a fight wit ICE. Once again they tried to prevent agents from exiting the building by using their bodies to block the door. Officers used pepper spray to clear them and were able to leave with someone in custody. But the activists continued to harass ICE officers in the street.

ICE officers encountered about 20 people who had gathered outside the court at 100 Montgomery St. Immigrants legally seeking asylum have been routinely arrested after their court hearings and flown to far-flung detention centers, and protesters often congregate outside court.

Witnesses said the two sides squared off — protesters trying to stop the vehicles, and ICE agents trying to get through.

ā€œThis car has ICE in it!ā€ one protester yelled. ā€œICE is not welcome in San Francisco!ā€ said another through a bullhorn as protesters stood in front of a silver minivan holding signs reading, ā€œStop your car to block ICE.ā€...

About a dozen ICE agents headed toward 630 Sansome St., the ICE headquarters about a half mile away, followed by protesters.

Here's video of the scene outside:

Several of the activist got carried away and one was arrested for destruction of property and threatening an officer. The person shouting into the camera in the first moments of this clip is the person who wound up getting arrested.

That individual is a trans person named Angelica aka Adrian GuerĀrero. Here's what promoted the arrest.

ProsĀeĀcuĀtors say that AnĀgelĀica GuerĀrero, aka Adrian GuerĀrero, used a knife to slash the tire of a van beĀing used by DeĀpartĀment of HomeĀland SeĀcuĀrity ofĀfiĀcials to transĀport a just-deĀtained susĀpect in the city’s fiĀnanĀcial disĀtrict on AuĀgust 20.

GuerĀrero is acĀcused of then purĀsuĀing DHS ofĀfiĀcers down the street, telling them ā€œI’m goĀing to f**k you up,ā€ ā€œI’m goĀing to go afĀter your famĀily,ā€ and ā€œI’m goĀing to stab you,ā€ while in posĀsesĀsion of the blade.

There are photos of Guerrero slashing the tire of an ICE transport van and of the knife used.

However, because both charges are misdemeanors the judge released Guerrero. The next court date is some time in September.

ā€œThe GovĀernĀment is obĀviĀously very conĀcerned about the conĀduct put forĀward in the comĀplaint,ā€ said asĀsisĀtant U.S. atĀtorĀney Dan Karmel, ā€œbut given the charges are misĀdeĀmeanors…the govĀernĀment is amenable to conĀdiĀtions of reĀlease – the main conĀcern we have is the safety of fedĀeral law enĀforceĀment and damĀage to fedĀeral buildĀings.ā€...

Karmel failed in a bid to have her proĀhibĀited from apĀproachĀing fedĀeral ofĀfiĀcials.

ā€œWhat is she supĀposed to do if she sees a uniĀformed fedĀeral ofĀfiĀcer – run away in the other diĀrecĀtion?ā€ asked an apĀparĀently unĀsymĀpaĀthetic Judge Kim to gales of laughĀter from the gallery.

The judge eventually agreed to tell Guerrero to stay away from the immigration court. Finally, here's a longer version of the video showing the arrest.
