Sophie Cunningham is making national headlines, but not for any highlight reel play on the court. The shooting guard for the Indiana Fever is having liberals cry foul for an exclusive interview with ESPN on July 21st, where she came out in support of states banning transgender athletes from youth sports and protecting women’s sports from trans men who want to compete.
The former McDonald’s All-American and 2025 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup Champion is no stranger to national controversy, as she became a household name for tackling an opponent who poked her all-star teammate Caitlyn Clark in the eye. She was recently quoted as saying, “Everyone wants to look the same. Everyone wants the same vibe. Screw that. I’m gonna be me.” And she’s willing to speak truth to power even if it comes at a cost.
Now that Cunningham’s views on men in women’s sports have been made public, she received an unnecessary amount of vitriol from the LGBTQ+ activists and liberal commentators referring to her as a “transphobe”, “bigot”, and a “trash human being.” She was even accused of “inciting fans” with a rally for her support before a game against the Seattle Storm, which was labeled “Anti-Trans.”
As unfortunate as these remarks are, there’s been no real attempt to dispute what Cunningham said. Instead of engaging in a thoughtful, honest debate of the issue at hand, the keyboard warriors are upset that she gave her balanced criticism of males competing in female sports.
