Police in West Bloomfield, Michigan, have rushed to the Temple Israel synagogue, where reports of an active shooter now also include a fire inside the building. A car reportedly crashed into the building first, followed by reports of gunfire. As usual, police are not sharing too much about what has happened, but are warning people to stay away.
It looks bad from this aerial shot, apparently from the local Fox News affiliate:

The Detroit Free Press notes the basics:
Police were responding to a report of an active shooter alert just before 1 p.m. Thursday, March 12, at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield.
Dozens of police vehicles from multiple agencies could be seen with lights activated outside the complex on Walnut Lake Road on Thursday afternoon. Helicopters flew overhead as well.
The West Bloomfield Police Department sent out an alert, urging residents to avoid the area and citing an "active situation."
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office, in a post on Facebook, stated it was a report of an active shooter and that they were responding along with other agencies.
The FBI has been warning that Jewish organizations and facilities could be targeted as hostilities ramped up with Iran. Those threats have been growing since the Hamas massacres of October 7, 2023, and we have already seen attacks on such facilities. And of course, we just had the two radical Islamist terrorists attempt to bomb a demonstration in New York City.
Apparently, this building had a pre-school operating at the time of the attack. Those students and teachers have all been evacuated and accounted for, according to the local CBS News affiliate. At the moment, it's not clear whether anyone has been injured or killed, but as of right now, the sheriff says they have no reports of injuries except possibly the shooter him/herself.
Stay tuned for updates. I'm watching this stream at the moment as well as keeping track of other sources.

Update: CBS News reports from police communication that the shooter is down, and armed security took him down. The scene is still locked down while the FBI and police ensure that no other shooter is involved. No word on the fire yet.
Update: As always, be careful with initial reports. It's okay to casually date them, but don't marry them unless you've met their mother. The county sheriff's PIO is being careful to note that the shooter is not yet "in custody," but not denying earlier reports that the shooter has been neutralized.
Update: Fox News also hears that the suspect is dead, and that armed security employed by the synagogue shot the suspect after he rammed a truck into the building:

He was engaged by security guards after the ramming.

CBS News also points out that this is one of the largest Jewish temples in the US, so it's a big target. They prepared well for this scenario, it appears.
Update: The sheriff just briefed reporters, but didn't have much new to offer. They do not have any indications of an "active" situation any longer, but the lockdown/shelter in place will remain in effect until the entire facility has been cleared. Local law enforcement will boost coverage around other Jewish facilities. It may take a while before the shooter is identified.
Update: No ID on the attacker yet, but the law enforcement PIO now confirms he's dead, although no one's willing ti say how he died. Security opened fire on him, but it's possible he took his own life. The lead armed security guard got hit by the truck as it went into the building and was knocked unconscious, but is expected to fully recover.
