Too Little, Too Late?

As the Organized Crime Democrats belatedly recognize that they are in danger of being supplanted by communists, their advocates in Pravda are starting to fight back hard.

I have a hard time seeing how that is going to help the Democratic Party escape the stink of extremism that emanates from their activists, like BO dominates the streets of Paris in August.

The Atlantic published a piece calling the Democratic Socialists of America a "parasite" on the Democratic Party—something that absolutely is true- and Joe Scarborough took to the airwaves on MSNOW calling out the crazy ideas that have invaded the Democratic Party.

The Atlantic is TDS central, of course, and MSNOW is where crazy people go to get their priors confirmed, so it's a pretty smart strategy by the OCDs to send a message to their most reliable voters that they have to pull back from the dangerous, perhaps suicidal path they have been going down.

The Atlantic piece is written by a centrist journalist who looks to the revival of the Labour Party under Neil Kinnock as a model for how the Democrats can expel their loonier activists, but he glided over the fact that the communists were kicked out of the Party only after they had hit rock bottom. The fact is, only repeated failures at the polls gave the establishment Labour politicians the motivation to pick a fight against the core of their activist base.

As with alcoholics, you have to hit rock bottom before you can start to clean up.

Thus far, the American left is not having any significant debate on the disturbing rise of the DSA. To save their party, and American liberalism, Democrats will need to reach back into their own history, to the early years of the Cold War, when liberal titans such as Arthur Schlesinger Jr. sought to purge the Democratic Party of Communist influence. They will need to understand that the DSA is not, as some Democrats once affectionately described Communists, a collection of well-intentioned if naive “liberals in a hurry,” but an illiberal vanguard. Establishment figures such as Jeffries and the party’s 2028 presidential candidates will need to grasp that the relationship between the DSA and the Democratic Party is not one of occasionally bickering siblings, but of parasite and host.

Democrats have spent the Trump era telling the American people that they’re the only political force capable of defending the country from authoritarianism. That argument will be impossible to maintain if they countenance an organization that honors the legacy of the convicted cop killer Assata Shakur and calls for “solidarity” with North Korea. But criticizing the DSA will only go so far. When David Duke was the Republican candidate for governor in Louisiana in 1991, prominent Republicans, including President George H. W. Bush, condemned the former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Some explicitly backed his Democratic opponent, the legendarily corrupt Edwin Edwards. Although the GOP certainly had a moral obligation to distance itself from a hate-monger, doing so was also in the party’s self-interest. Democrats, whose brand is viewed as too left-wing in five out of six Senate-battleground states, should be similarly wary of fanatics trying to infiltrate their ranks.

Open letters aren’t enough. If the Democrats want to root out the party within their party, they will need to stop indulging the DSA’s constant, passive-aggressive attempts to undermine them. This would require prohibiting DSA members from joining their party and throwing out the DSA members already honeycombed within it. Four decades ago, Labour’s Neil Kinnock expelled the extremist faction burrowing within his beloved party. If Democrats want to rescue their party, they may need to do the same.

Van Jones got a lot of plaudits from both the left and the right for his monologue attacking the DSA and the antisemites in his party, and no doubt many Democratic Party officeholders quietly believe what he is saying.

But the basic problem is that the Democrats in office are scared to death of bucking the socialists and communists. They have been feeding this movement for decades, judging that it would provide a strong base of activists willing to "community organize" and act as ground troops.

And Democrat politicians ride on the waves of passion that stem from these socialists—witness how every time Code Pink or Antifa or any of a number of NGOs push an issue, Democratic politicians amplify their messaging. Activists hate ICE? Suddenly ICE is the #1 topic.

Gender ideology? All in.

For a long time, the DSA types were the tail that wagged the dog, precisely because they provide the infrastructure that keeps the machine running in urban areas.

Now the DSA wants to be in the driver's seat, and in the short term there is no way to stop them from taking it. That's why you hear so many Democrats talking about a big tent; they can't buck the people with the wind at their backs.

If it's only pundits who are willing to stand up to the radicals taking over the Democratic Party, the radicals will continue to displace the OCDs.

And will they? Almost none of them, because all they have to do is look at John Fetterman to see what happens if you do. Or, for that matter, Janet Mills in Maine, who, even as a popular governor, was smoked by a Nazi-turned-communist rapist in both the money and electoral race.

The Democrats raised this tiger from a pup. They fed it, housed it, trained it, and now are riding on its back, knowing that if they try to get off it, it will eat them as quickly as it would eat any Republican.

It will take serious election losses for this to change. Establishment Democrats might win a battle here or there, but any serious correction will only come at a high cost.

Editor's Note: The Democrat Party has never been less popular as voters reject its globalist agenda.
