You never get a second chance to make a first impression. Right?
The wisdom behind that saying is pretty obvious: if you get the story you want out first, even subsequent information that ought to change how we see things rarely fully penetrates to shape how you think about something once you have a set picture in your mind.
Headlines are constructed to shape those first impressions, coloring stories before you even read them. The lede of a story often determines how you read the rest of it, or even if you will. If something in paragraph 9 reshapes the meaning of everything above it, the chances that the first impression gets revised are pretty low, and the writers know that.
Think of how the Steele Dossier's introduction into the public consciousness shaped all subsequent discussion and still matters today. It's no secret why James Comey leaked it after "briefing" Donald Trump—it created a sheen of credibility to what was otherwise an insane document; so insane that when it was originally shopped to news outlets, they declined to cover it.
Two examples of attempts to shape the Narrative occurred within one week in the United Kingdom. The first was the murder of Anne Widdecombe, in which the police and government tried for days to hide the fact that it was a politically motivated left-wing terror attack; the second was a scare created by Keir Starmer to imply that there was a massive right-wing/Islamophobic terrorist cell planning to murder innocent Muslims, when in fact it was just some neighbors wondering what was happening at a meeting center in their area.
No doubt you already know about the first case, in which Reform Party spokeswoman Anne Widdecombe was assassinated by a left-wing lunatic whose home was filled with communist literature. He had traveled hundreds of miles specifically to murder Widdecombe, but the police kept insisting that it was probably a random killing, and they were confident there were no political motivations.
They do this all the time, although usually the information they are trying to suppress is the race or religion of an offender, with the occasional lies about the transgender status of a killer or rapist. Even in the coverage of the Widdecombe murder, the police kept reminding us that the killer was white.
Did you know he was white? Yes, he was white! White white white. It popped out to me because it was almost a drumbeat, just as the "we have no reason to believe it was political" statements that were a steady refrain.
The first was true, and they were clearly relieved that it was; the second was false, but they kept repeating it because the truth didn't fit what they wanted you to believe.
So it turns out Shabana Mahmood was gaslighting the nation and talking bollocks about the alleged terrorist attack on the Ijtima at Shrubland Hall.

Proof, as is needed, she is too stupid and possibly too radicalized by her very own religion to be able to make sound, well-balanced statements, without bias and pre-judgement and should not be Home Secretary.
This other case is even more troubling—and emblematic. After all, it's harder to shape a narrative about a murder case that will remain in the news on and off for weeks or months, so it was almost pointless or even counterproductive to try to shape The Narrative™. Now everybody knows they were lying, and why.
But in this fake "terrorism" story, the objective will be better served, since it will be dropped in a day because...nothing happened, and there will be nothing to report. The first impression is made, and then the story disappears.
Last week Prime Minister Starmer—yes, he is still, technically, PM until the leadership election is official—dramatically announced police raids that thwarted an Islamophobic mass casualty event, and incoming PM Andy Burnham amplified the quick work of the police in thwarting a terrible tragedy brought on by horrific white supremacists!
So no terrorism charges after all.

Shocking news that Counter Terrorism Police are investigating a credible, serious threat targeted at an Islamic event in Suffolk.
Thanks to the quick action taken by police and the organisers, nobody was hurt.
My message is clear: I will not tolerate any attacks on our Muslim communities, or any form of anti-Muslim hatred.
Dramatic arrests were made. Politicians shouted from the rooftops. "Islamophobia" was decried. It was a very impressive operation, and all based on a falsehood. I can't say that the police were engaged in an "op" for the public—they probably just panicked and decided that preemptive action was warranted over what turned out to be a nothingburger.
But what happened after the arrests was pure propaganda.
Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) previously opened an investigation into a suspected threat against the UK Ijtima event held at Shrubland Hall, Suffolk from 9-12 July.
Twelve people [A-L] were arrested in connection with the investigation on Sunday 12 and Monday 13 July. Four people [I-L] were previously released on bail pending further enquiries. Eight others [A-H] were detained by police under section 41 of the Terrorism Act, meaning they could be detained up to seven days from their arrest.
A thirteenth man [M] was arrested on Thursday, 16 July on suspicion of an offence under section 5 of the Terrorism Act, 2006.
Officers from CTP London have been carrying out extensive enquiries over the past few days, which has included searching several residential addresses and vehicles, and they have seized more than 35 digital devices.
On Saturday, 18 July seven men [A, B, C, D, F, G, H] were released from custody without charge. Another man [M] has been released on bail with strict conditions pending further enquiries.
Following the recovery of certain items during searches carried out as part of the investigation, a 42-year-old man [E] has been charged with two offences linked to possession of offensive weapons – namely extendable batons – as well as possession of a stun gun. He has been remanded in custody to appear at Reading Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 20 July.
It is important to note that the items and the offences he has been charged with are not believed to be connected to the alleged threat being investigated.
Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of CTP London said: “This has been a fast-moving investigation after we became aware of information to indicate there was a potential threat towards the Islamic event over the course of last weekend.
“Since then, we have made extensive enquiries, but at this time, we have found no evidence to support anyone being charged with any offences linked to the alleged threat.
It all started with some guys flying a drone, and morphed into mass arrests of people all around the UK. Alarms were sounded, places evacuated, lots of talk of Islamophobic violence, the Home Secretary, the PM, and the incoming PM all sprang into action to warn about "extreme right-wing terrorism" that did not happen, and that was not planned.
Yesterday, all charges for the men swept up in this "terrorism" investigation were quietly dropped, with the police admitting that all the sound and fury was over nothing.
We went from "Lives saved from Right-wing extremists" to Emily Litella's "Never mind."

PM Keir Starmer said it was a “credible, serious threat” and vowed: “I will not tolerate any attacks on our Muslim communities.”
Will those who cried foul now apologise?
Now, if everybody paid attention to every story diligently, keeping an open mind until all the facts come out, you could argue that no harm was done.
But...of course it doesn't work that way. The initial "news" was blasted far and wide, prominent people jumped and screamed, a big impression was made. When the truth comes out, it's treated as a nothingburger, and it just goes away. There are no BBC stories calling the politicians liars or demanding to know why they rang the alarm bells falsely, or making them apologize to the people who were slandered.

Instead, an indelible impression was made in the average person's mind that Right-wingers are plotting to kill Muslims, which was the point.

And, of course, the left-wing murder of Widdecombe was driven off the front pages and from the news coverage in general. The death of one person, which was downplayed from the beginning, doesn't make nearly the impression as a massive conspiracy to murder hundreds of people naturally would.
This fake case was a shiny object used to distract people and plant the false idea that large numbers of people—terrorist cells?—are plotting Islamophobic attacks.
That was the point. It's nothing but Narrative-building.
