Christian and I start off our week by discussing stories and ideas that may fly under our radar, in culture, politics, sports, and more. Plus, Christian previews his latest podcast at HiT.
Ed's back from his vacation, and Christian is fresh off his screening of the new Tom Cruise film, Digger. And the news is ... not good at all for Cruise's apparent hopes of finally winning an Oscar. Christian describes a film that is all lecture and no fun, which Ed compares to – wait for it! – The Shape of Water. Christian wondered what the overall critics' verdict would be for a film that he believes will contend for the worst of the year. Ed wonders whether the Hollywood establishment and media will circle the wagons around this climate-change lecture.
That takes us to a discussion of the Critical Drinker's recent scolding of activist actors. Are all forms of entertainment political? We debate that point, but 'political' isn't the problem. Partisanship is the problem, especially when it gets shoved down our throats, even by bigger stars.
Christian then unloads on the producers of Primetime, Hollywood's hit piece on Chris Hansen for ... [checks notes] ... exposing child-abusing predators. In what universe would that make someone a villain? Perhaps that is the real question.
