Welcome back to our VIP video series "Off the Beaten Path," featuring my friend Christian Toto of Hollywood in Toto! Christian and I start off our week by discussing stories and ideas that may fly under our radar, in culture, politics, sports, and more. Plus, Christian previews his latest podcast at HiT.

Just when you thought the news couldn’t get worse for Supergirl or James Gunn, the film fell to fourth in its second weekend. Coming in at a strong third place was Young Washington, a modestly budged but fully patriotic historical drama. Those who wanted to find any reference at all to our nation’s founding or positive depictions of it had no other option, as Christian and Ed discuss.

What went wrong with Supergirl? It’s not superhero fatigue or even a weakening of the attractiveness of the cinema, as Toy Story 5 still has a full steam behind it as a strong #2 to Minions and Monsters.  We discuss the excuses being made in the wake of the DCU flop, and wonder whether Gunn is a one-trick pony.

We also wonder whether The Odyssey will have the same problems with audience appeal. Too many films look unappealing as color palettes seem to fixate on the fecal range, including the trailers for Nolan’s upcoming epic. It seems as though directors are trying for film noir but are winding up with film merde instead, Plus, we talk about Bruce Springsteen’s definition of “patriotism."
